The Fish Box is a plastic tank – moulded from either polystyrene or polycarbonate – designed to keep fish in individual enclosures. The boxes are currently available in three sizes. All tanks have inbuilt inlet and outlet ports and can easily be combined to form large holding systems. The polycarbonate version is suitable for laboratory use. Applications of the Fish Box system
Pet fish import:
Particularly applicable to reef fish, upon import each fish is placed into an individual Fish Box. There they can recover from the stress of transportation, protected from any aggressive behaviour by other fish – the opposite of what frequently occurs when they are all acclimated together in larger aquariums. For onward transport to the retailer the Fish Box can easily be removed from the system, the outlet port closed and the Fish Box used as transport container. The fish are not subject to the further stress of being caught and placed in transport bags. The retailer can then add the Fish Box into his system
– ultimately even the end user could take the fish home in the Fish Box and connect it to his system to acclimate the fish until he releases it into the aquarium – returning the Fish Box to his retailer at a later date.
Laboratory fish systems:
The Fish Box can be built into large holding facilities where the water is treated in centralised filter systems. The Fish Box can be used for breeding and holding laboratory fish such as the zebra fish (Danio rerio), which is used for genetic studies. Using the Fish Box full traceability can be maintained, as the fish need never leave their relevant box. The polycarbonate
